The Chapel of Martyrs in the Cathedral of Otranto, Apulia, Italy. The city of Otranto was besieged by the Ottomans in 1480; the city captured, the Ottomans marched 800 of her men to a certain hill— the Hill of Minerva. But rather than renounce their faith, the 800 elected to face death and embrace martyrdom: and thus it was that all of them were beheaded in full view of each other. Today their skulls are proudly displayed within a wall in the Cathedral, silent witnesses to the strength of faith.
